Declaration of Sourashtri Script

Sourashtri Prachar Sabha, Tamil Nadu with the help of All India Sourashtra Madhya Saba and People of Sourashtra community  declared their writing system after consultation of Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) a Government of India organisation.  The declaration as follows :
We, about 15 lakh people of Sourashtri mother tongue, in Tamil Nadu and other places take pride to adapt and give to ourselves the " Varnamala" derived out of the etters in the Parivartit Devnagari script approved by Govt. of India and as evolved in consultation with the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore.
The "Varnamala" made out of Parivartit Devnagari script as adapted today shall be the script for the Sourashtri language spoken in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere for the Sourashtrees and be hencefort known as " Sourashtri Lipi".  This declaration fullfils the long pending desire of Sourashtri people to have a graphic expression for their language.
This declaration made on this 8th August 2009, is presented to the Sourashtri speaking population in the presence of the authorities from the Govt. of Tamil Nadu and officials of Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore and the Linguistic Minority Commission Chennai, at the venue IIPE Laxmi Raman Matric, Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai-627002.

Before this declaration of Sourashtri alphabets to write minority language called Sourashtra or Sourashtri, a temporary arrangement of script derived from devanagari script is followed by few people.  But however most of sourashtra population does not aware of his script till today.   Mr. Ramarai from madurai  altered Devnagari script, and he called it is Sourashtra language script.  The below figure comparison explain how he arrived sourashtra script from devnagari script.  He removed the upper line of Devnagari script.  And he make its looks into circular shape.  He fully replaced few letters from Devnagari script.  Though he was Sanskrit Pandit, he used to add Special Sanskrit " Samyuktakshar" to Sourashtra language like " Iru' irU, klu, klU "  But these sounds not in today's sourashtra language.

Sourashtra Lipi Derived from Devnagari Script done by Ramarai
One can see the above chart, came a conclusion, that Sourashtra Lipi altered from Devnagari Script  Just like Gujarati Lipi altered from Devnagari lipi  and it was called Mahajani lipi.  At the time of linguistic based State partition, State of Saurashtra divided as " Gujarat and Maharashtra" .  So naturally there is a need to make some difference between these two states as identity of their writing system.  Maharashtri adopted Devnagari script as it is , and Gujarati altered Devnagar script and replaced few letteres.  Similarly Ramarao was done alteration.  But wonderly, In saurashtra land, tamil nadu had two different script to write sourashtra.  The main reason is Tamil nadu Sourashtra is a Dialect of olden Saurashtra and present gujarati does not match much.  So Tamil Nadu Sourashtrians demanded Govt to list Sourashtra as separate language instead it is called as dialect of Gujarati.
